India’s ‘Master’ Has A Blast In Global Debut; ‘Soul’ Becomes China’s No. 3 Pixar Pic – International Box Office

Images from the market, particularly the state of Tamil Nadu and its capital Chennai, demonstrated a frenzy among moviegoers to get back to cinemas. The movie may end up frontloaded, but it shows how avid Indian audiences are when it comes to their homegrown titles and stars — and it offers promise for future key releases. Master is the first major Indian title to hit big screens since the start of the pandemic, and hopes had been pinned on it to help revive the local box office after a long lockdown period. Given India's cinemas have 50% capacity restrictions, the estimated performance is impressive — we understand that Master’s opening day locally was off just 20% from Vijay’s 2019 hit Bigil.
The U.S. For the four-day MLK holiday domestically, it's at No. 1, is estimated to be over $750K for the weekend. did about $350K including previews that began on Tuesday. In Australia, Master did an estimated $470K through Saturday and in New Zealand that figure was $89K through Sunday. The UAE sold an estimated 133K tickets for an approximate debut of $1.3M. Singapore, where the movie was tracking at No. 8. A local source notes that fans “have been cut off from these films for a long, long time. This is encouraging.”

Elsewhere, China added two new movies this session but still gave preference to A Little Red Flower which was No. Freshman entries The Soul (not to be confused with the Dis/Pixar film) and Jackie Chan-starrer Wish Dragon did $9.6M and $7.2M, respectively. 1 again in the market and has cumed $182M through Sunday. Shock Wave 2 (see our review, here) came in 2nd again, having now grossed $164M, including $19M from IMAX.
Bows in such international box office markets as UAE, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand, along with the U.S., added about $3M (including previews) for the film from director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Refresh for latest…: Fans of Kollywood cinema got a treat this weekend as Tamil action thriller Master debuted in India and a handful of other markets across the harvest festival period. While we do not have confirmed figures for the Vijay-starrer in India, estimates had it at around $11M from Wednesday-Friday with the film believed to have crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore ($15M) gross mark over the weekend.
Australia had a strong hold on WW84 with a 31% drop from last weekend to cume $16.1M and Brazil also held well (-32%) for $5.4M to date. WB plans to release a number of smaller markets in the coming weeks with the remaining majors currently on hold due to COVID restrictions.
Holds were strong in Taiwan (-10%/4.3M cume), Saudi Arabia (-13%/$4.5M cume), UAE (-21%/$1M cume) and Singapore (-41%/$1.2M cume). In total, the Pete Docter original added $5.8M in 11 markets this session and has cumed $57.4M overseas. Next weekend sees further openings in Russia and Korea.
We will update when the picture becomes clearer. Now, as we always caution, it is notoriously difficult to cull early numbers out of India given its varied states and reporting structure — which in some cases is gross and in others net after the subtraction of an entertainment tax. The situation is further complicated when a movie releases in four different language versions as is the case with Master (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi).
In studio play, Disney/Pixar’s Soul continued its strong run in China, dropping just 39% from last weekend. It’s now the third highest-grossing Pixar release of all time in the Middle Kingdom with an estimated $43.1M.
DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s The Croods: A New Age picked up another $2.2M in 17 markets for a 55% dip. Australia is the lead market at $12.1M (down just 26% from the previous session), and is followed by Russia with $11.7M, surpassing the original film’s lifetime. The offshore cume is $94.7M for $135M global.
Warner Bros’/DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 crossed $100M overseas this week. 2 behind Disney’s local sequel The Last Warrior: Root Of Evil, which had made $24.5M through Saturday. Russia’s cinemas are operating at 25% seating capacity. The Gal Gadot-starrer officially bowed in Russia this frame, following previews last week, and grossed $2.6M at No. It added $5.2M from 41 markets in the current session to bring the offshore cume to $105.9M for $141.7M worldwide (including $11.3M from IMAX).

India’s Producers Guild Outlines Safety Protocols For Filming Post-COVID

Perhaps taking a page out of Balthasar Kormakur’s book, the Producers Guild says “all on set crew must wear colored bands which can help identify their roles.” Color-coding will also be used for the production of non-fiction TV series.
Also for the first three months from the beginning of shooting, says the guild, crew above the age of 60 “should be avoided” and cast above the age of 60 “should be judicially used.”
The guild’s guidelines come a few days after India’s Multiplex Association and the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) revealed their own proposals for movie theater re-openings. It has been estimated that India's box office losses during the coronavirus crisis are at about $130M.” /> The guidelines resemble practices in other markets such as social distancing, online booking and single-use disposable packaging for concessions.
In the case of pre-production, the Producers Guild says auditions will be carried out online while costume fittings will be minimal and recommends having different make-up artists for actors and for extras. Whenever possible, talent will use "second skin overalls" to minimize contact with costumes.
There must be a certified nurse on set for the initial 3 months after shooting starts again, and an ambulance on stand-by at all times. Prime importance is placed on sanitization of studios, sets and offices with monthly swab tests to be implemented. Temperature checks and informed consent forms to be signed by all talent and crew are also part of the guidelines. One or two dedicated “Anti-COVID Boys” should be on set to ensure that all procedures are maintained, the report says.
The Producers Guild of India has released a lengthy set of risk protection guidelines to be implemented when filming resumes in the market. Though an official production start date has yet to be fixed, the "Back To Action" report outlines safety measures for the world’s biggest maker of films whose audience leans heavily towards local fare. Among the protocols are regular hand-washing, the use of three-ply masks and social distancing as well as training and daily drills to ensure precautions “become a habit.” Color-coding for crew members and a suggestion that crew above 60 years of age be avoided are further mentioned.
There are further guidelines for art, sound, camera and grip departments as well as catering services with staff members “ideally advised to carry home-prepared food.” Check out the full report here.

Lil Durk – Turn Myself In Lyrics

Play this song
Squat made the beat
Turn me up, Josh
Go Grizz
W-W-W-Winner’s Circle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, God, can you hear me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, niggas ain’t really with me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, main homies turned against me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard the story, think I’m finished
Yeah, yeah, yeah, give my lawyer a hundred and fifty
Ooh, oh
[Verse 1]
I wish I would turn myself in before I fuck one last time
I wish I would turn myself in before I pour up one pint
I wish I would turn myself in without kissin’ my kids, no, it ain’t right
I wish I would turn myself in without playin’ that shit back that night
I wish I would turn myself in without droppin’ my album
I wish I would put trust in a nigga knowin’ they goin’ sour
I told ’em I wish I would, I fuck her in the butt, go douche
Told her put a big bag on my books, make sure my artist get pushed
Look up at the judge, can’t look, stay makin’ up lies for sure
I’m a innocent man for sure, it is what it is for sure
Nobody gon’ ride, had a warrant so I can’t hide
India gon’ stay by my side, I did a song with Chance tonight
He gave me positive vibes, to better my image for life
I turn myself in tonight, head down with these cuffs on, then read me my rights
Yeah, yeah, yeah, God, can you hear me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, niggas ain’t really with me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, main homies turned against me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard the story, think I’m finished
Yeah, yeah, yeah, give my lawyer a hundred and fifty
Yeah, yeah, yeah, niggas ain’t really with me Yeah, yeah, yeah, niggas ain’t really with me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, main homies turned against me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard the story, think I’m finished
Yeah, yeah, yeah, give my lawyer a hundred and fifty
Ooh, oh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, God, can you hear me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, niggas ain’t really with me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, main homies turned against me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard the story, think I’m finished
Yeah, yeah, yeah, give my lawyer a hundred and fifty
Ooh, oh
[Verse 2]
I got 5 million followers, I need 5 million dollars
I scream “Free Melly” from my cell even though they ain’t got em
Mmm, free Von, free Zoo, even though they got the same problem
Mmm, false accusation, why they name droppin’? They wanna know if I’m rappin’ or robbin’, takin’ these drugs for family problems
I get a call, I call my mama, mmm, I’m sorry
I get a bond, not givin’ them property, no, I can’t tell, that’s part of the policy
If you don’t fuck with me, nigga, then fuck you, but I show love for niggas apart of me
I went from Margielas to state shoes, Amiri denims to jump suits
Locked in a cell with a curfew, in population, they can hurt you
No PC, commissary and receipts, fan mail, I gotta reread
New rappers wanna be, can’t be me, I’m gangsta
Yeah, yeah, yeah, God, can you hear me?

‘Avengers: Endgame’: Is A $1B Global Opening Even Possible? If So, Here’s How It Would Go Down – B.O. Preview

Friday, April 26: Spain, Japan, Mexico, as well as South Africa, India, Vietnam, Venezuela and Ecuador
To date Disney's MCU counts 21 films released to date which have amassed $18.6B worldwide (an average of $885M a film). The Avengers series (Avengers, Age of Ultron, Infinity War) has a combined global gross of nearly $5B (average of $1.66B per film).
The midnight pre-sales will likely come in around the $20M mark, topping all previous titles – including Furious 8’s $9.1M and Infinity War’s $8.9M midnights (at historic rates). China presales have hardly slowed with $80M now in the bank and $90M+ expected. That translated to 18 tickets being sold a second. Endgame presales in China brokes records in a matter of hours becoming the the Middle Kingdom's top preseller ever; not even a Chinese New Year title has ever crossed the 1M admission level that the Marvel did in a matter of three hours. Record presales are in full swing in the U.S./Canada, estimated to be north of $120M+, and even around the world: In India, online retailer BookMyShow reports that they sold 1m tickets in just one day in advance of the pic's April 26 opening in the country in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. We hear that initial showtimes for Endgame in metropolitan areas of China are going for anywhere between $60 to $150 a ticket.
International release breakdown is as follows:
In Singapore, online ticketing platforms crashed when seats became available, and in India we hear advance bookings could set a new record. (Globally, Endgame, which was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, will be on 1,400 screens in the format.) At least 175 midnight shows throughout the UK, according to Applaudience, were sold out by local time this afternoon for Wednesday night, with hundreds more going fast. In regards to the rest of the world selling out on Endgame The IMAX BFI in London, for example, has only a handful of seats left in the 4AM and 8AM slots over the first weekend.
 ” />
Factor in the Middle Kingdom’s $190M adjusted and that rises to $550M. The movie finaled at $1.370B overseas and $2.048B worldwide at unadjusted rates. It was the fastest movie ever to $1B worldwide, the fourth movie to ever cross $2B and is the No. 3 film of all time at the international box office. Infinity War’s overseas opening last year was $360M at today’s rates and without China. Infinity War’s ultimate top offshore markets were China ($360M), the UK ($96.6M), Korea ($88.5M), Brazil ($66.7M) and Mexico ($60M), all at unadjusted rates.
China, midnight Tuesday. That's when Avengers: Endgame begins to rumble around the world, box office wise.
While the 22nd pic in the MCU is getting a five-day launch in China, it has only one day of play where school and work are not a factor. We have heard that sales are lower on the first Sunday versus the previous days. But it’s important to recall that F8 had a full weekend and DC2 opened during Chinese New Year. Historically, Furious 8 and Detective Chinatown 2 hold records for the first five days of a film in China at about $240M each. Because the State Council has given companies and students an extended four-day break from May 1-4, those extra days off are being compensated by Sunday April 28 (and Sunday May 5) being work days.
Many offshore cinemas are programming through the night and doubling up on auditoriums, much like the world No. Vue International’s pre-sales are breaking records with almost four times more tickets sold through last week than on Infinity War, and 2% more than The Force Awakens at the same stage. In the Philippines, several malls are staying open 24 hours to accommodate screenings while others are starting showings at 6AM. In U.S./Canada 450 Theatres will run special fan event screenings at 5pm Thursday. Vue’s UK Westfield and Printworks cinemas are running 24-hour screenings; smaller sites are showing it every 30 minutes. 1 exhibitor AMC is doing in the states, even keeping the lights on for 72 hours straight at some locations. Additionally, 12 theatres in major markets will run 22 film MCU Marathons (kicking off Tuesday morning), leading into the Thursday 5pm showing of Endgame.
Thursday, April 25:  UK, Brazil, as well as Croatia, Czech Rep, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, Argentina, Panama, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad, Bolivia, Chile and Colombia
Wednesday, April 24: France, Germany, Italy, Australia, China, Korea, as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Lebanon, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand
Endgame makes its world premiere tonight in Los Angeles and the social media embargo lifts at 10pm PST. The global review embargo lifts at 3pm PST tomorrow so we'll see what the Rotten Tomatoes score is then.
hit $270M (and no less) and China overindexes to $310M, then a billion reach by Sunday from Thanos and The Avengers is possible. (or both) would need to overperform. If Endgame is going to hit a $1 billion global weekend opening, what would need to happen as we understand is that China or the U.S. $300M-plus a piece would be amazing, however, should the U.S. Grounded projections for China are in the $250M, $280M-plus range.
Even if the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed misses that mark, some forecast that through Endgame's first ten days it could make $1.5 billion. The film industry waits with bated breath, at what could be potentially be a colossal opening. In some distribution hallways around town, people are talking a $300M domestic opening and a–gasp–$1 billion worldwide start. U.S./Canada starts off at 6PM on Thursday. With the exception of Russia, which releases Monday April 29, Endgame will go out everywhere day-and-date internationally beginning Wednesday. Mind-boggling.
If we comp Infinity War’s China pre-sales of $65M to the rest of its opening weekend, they repped about 35% which would point to around $300M for Endgame’s bow. But, this is a tricky comp since it can’t be assumed that the advance ticket buyers on Endgame didn’t also see Infinity War during the first weekend, just without pre-buying.
Disney will have the full exhibition might of 3,900 3D venues, 250 D-Boxes, Dolby, 410 Imax and 785 PLFs, which is de-rigueur for a Marvel movie. Broken out that's $680M abroad (This which would rep a new international box office record, dusting 2017’s The Fate Of The Furious which bowed everywhere save Japan in mid-April that year, to $433.2M, unadjusted) and $260M-$270M in U.S. Disney reports that Endgame will play on an industry record of 4,600 theaters coast to coast in U.S./Canada with screenings kicking off on Thursday at 6PM. Canada, also an all-time record. Currently, Nancy and I are hearing that $940M-$950M global is more in line with  cooler heads' global prognostication.

Rajkumar Hirani, Acclaimed Indian Film Director, Faces Sex Harassment Accusation

The unidentified woman said Hirani sexually abused her more than once between March and September 2018 during post-production on Sanju. The accuser said Hirani started the problems in April 2018 when he made a sexually suggestive remark, then sexually assaulted her at his home office.
Fans reacted with dismay at the reports on Hirani:
He is best known as the director of Hindi language films Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots, PK, and Sanju. Hirani has denied the allegations and no lawsuit has been filed. The films have won multiple awards in India and are regarding as groundbreaking.″ />

I had suggested immediately that it is essential to take this matter to any committee or any legal body. “I was completely shocked when these allegations were brought to my notice about two months back. Hirani issued a statement today on the accusations. I want to very strongly state that this is a false, malicious and mischievous story being spread with the sole intention of destroying my reputation.” The complainant has chosen to go to the media instead.
The writer of the initial report on Hirani issued a tweet:

The film has since grossed $83 million worldwide and has six nominations at the upcoming Asian Film Awards, including a best director nod for Hirani. The allegation arises from an alleged series of incidents involving a female assistant director who worked on the 2018 film Sanju, a biopic of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt that was released in June 2018.
Bollywood fans reacted in shock today at a report that Rajkumar Hirani, one of India's most successful and acclaimed filmmakers, has been accused by an actress of sexual harassment.

It was unbearable, but the reason I endured it all until I couldn’t was because I didn’t want my job to be taken away from me, and work to be questioned. I was worried that if I left midway, it would be impossible to find another job in this industry if he were to speak badly about my work, because if Hirani said I wasn’t good, everybody would listen. Ever. In an interview with the Huffington Post, the alleged victim said, “I had no choice but to be polite to him. My future would be in jeopardy.”

Fox Board To Meet Next Week To Consider Comcast Bid: Report

21st Century Fox's board of directors will meet next Wednesday to consider Comcast's $65 billion bid to acquire most of its film and television assets, Bloomberg reports.
Fox declined to comment on the report.
Now, Comcast is back, saying it has addressed anitrust concerns. Comcast had previously been in the running to buy Fox, but lost out to Disney — in part, because of perceived regulatory hurdles.
“We are  … highly confident that our proposed transaction will obtain all necessary regulatory approvals in a timely manner and that our transaction is as or more likely to receive regulatory approval than the Disney transaction,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said in a letter to the Murdochs.
This regularly scheduled board meeting was set before Comcast upended the sale process with its more lucrative offer for the same collection of assets, which include Fox's plans to sell the film and television studios, its FX and National Geographic cable networks and its stake in the UK's Sky, Star in India and the streaming service Hulu.
The deal had been expected to close this summer.” /> Disney has yet to publicly respond to the rival bid.
in a $52.4 billion all-stock transaction, must evaluate whether the U.S. cable giant's competing offer has a chance of becoming a superior offer before it could enter negotiations with Comcast, according to the report. The Fox board, which had agreed last year to sell these assets to the Walt Disney Co.

‘Padmavati’: Threats Of Violence, Protests Over Bollywood Movie Extend To UK

Bhansali has also received threats, and in January was attacked on the set of the film by the fringe Karni Sena. Padukone, who has starred in such blockbusters as Chennai Express and Bajirao Mastani, as well as XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage, has received death threats including a bounty being placed on her head which this week was endorsed, and increased, by a member of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.
We are a responsible, law-abiding corporate citizen and have the highest respect and regard for the law of the land and all our institutions and statutory bodies including the Central Board of Film Certification. "Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind ‘Padmavati’ has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017. The film is an eloquent portrayal of a tale that will fill every Indian with pride and showcase our country’s story-telling prowess across the globe. Along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, amongst the most gifted film makers of his generation, Viacom18 Motion Pictures has created a beautiful cinematic masterpiece in ‘Padmavati’ that captures Rajput valor, dignity and tradition in all its glory. We have faith that we will soon obtain the requisite clearances to release the film." We always have and are committed to continue following the established procedure and convention.
In a statement that also applies to the Paramount release in the rest of the world, a V18 spokesperson recently said: It remains to be seen when the film will actually see the inside of a movie theater. In India, Viacom18 had voluntarily moved to postpone the December 1 release with the decision ultimately down to the Central Board of Film Certification.
Further in the UK, home to a vast Indian community, London-based Hindu charity Rajput Samaj is seeking to have the BBFC revoke the movie's certification over what it claims is an historically inaccurate account, rather than the claims of other groups over the scenes Bhansali has repeatedly said do not exist. Rajput Samaj has also said it will hold peaceful protests, stressing to The Guardian that it is against any violence.
Producers Viacom18 last Sunday delayed the Indian release indefinitely and Paramount, which acquired the film for the rest of the world, is understood to be awaiting the local decision before moving forward with any offshore distribution.
He added, "Every cinema screening Padmavati will be burned.” The group had previously burned sets and costumes from the film, according to local reports. The photo at left shows members of the Rajput community burn an effigy of Bhansali this week. Also this week, a Karni Sena leader appeared on Mumbai-based Republic TV and called on people from the Rajput community in the UK to protest.″ />
This comes as the Deepika Padukone-starrer continues to face angry sentiment and threats against cast and crew. In another development on Friday, a body was found hanged near the site of one of the film's shooting locations with a note reportedly referencing the movie. This is all before the film has been screened publicly. Amid escalating tension surrounding Bollywood epic Padmavati, India's extremist Rajput caste group Karni Sena has threatened to burn down any British cinema that screens the film.
Over centuries of the poem’s retelling, it has taken on historical significance, although there is little evidence the events involving Padmavati actually occurred. Shahid Kapoor and Ranvir Singh also star. Padmavati recounts the tale of Rani Padmavati, a Mewar queen who appears in the 16th century epic poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The story sees a sultan lay siege to the Chittor Fort in pursuit of the queen, her husband killed and she herself commit self-immolation rather than be captured. The film is based on Bhansali’s operatic rendition of the poem which played in Paris and Rome.
India’s First Post says Karni Sena has denied involvement in the incident. Next to the body was a note scratched into a rock, "We don't burn effigies, we hang," with the word "Padmavati" etched below. The ANI news service reported the body had been identified as that of a local man, while BBC Hindi said police had not determined if it was a suicide or murder. Adding to the ongoing situation, news reports out of India on Friday said that a body was found hanging at a fort in Jaipur, not far from where the film shot earlier this year.
The furor surrounding Padmavati, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is based on what some groups say is offensive sexual content while others claim historical inaccuracies.
Although Padukone has pulled out of Ivanka Trump’s upcoming Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad, she did attend last night’s Asiavision Movie Awards where she was honored as Icon of the Year. She did not allude to the Padmavati situation in her acceptance speech.
But director Bhansali has repeatedly denied such a scene exists. Extremist and fringe groups have claimed the movie includes a dream sequence in which the Muslim sultan romances the Hindu queen.
Here's the trailer which has garnered about 49M views since early October:
